PANAJI: To meet the burgeoning demand for the city's sole river transportation route, the department of river navigation (RND) is set to introduce two new high-speed ferries on the Panaji-Betim stretch. Running at a speed of 10 knots each, these vessels promise to offer commuters a faster, smoother, and more efficient journey across the scenic waters of the Mandovi.

"The decision to deploy these larger and swifter vessels comes as a response to the escalating footfall of commuters on the Panaji-Betim route, with queues forming even before the ferry docks," said RND superintendent Vikram Raje Bhosale.
With an average of 11,000 commuters and over 5,000 two-wheelers navigating the route daily, the introduction of high-speed ferries is expected to alleviate congestion and streamline transit operations.
"The impending construction of a flyover at Porvorim is anticipated to lead to traffic diversions, which will further increase footfall on the Panaji-Betim ferry route. By introducing these advanced vessels ahead of schedule, RND aims to pre-emptively address potential logistical challenges and ensure seamless connectivity during the construction phase," he said.
In addition to their superior speed, the new ferries boast increased capacity, with the ability to accommodate eight cars compared to the current fleet's capacity of six each. However, adherence to RND regulations ensures that passenger safety remains paramount, with a maximum capacity of 150 individuals per vessel, irrespective of size.
"The technical bid process for the new ferries is already underway," he said.
The introduction of the two new vessels will ensure retirement of the route's two existing ferries, Harvalem and Mormagoa. These two vessels, which sail at a speed of seven knots, will be condemned after having completed two decades of service for thousands of passengers traversing the iconic river.
