2. General Upendra Dwivedi takes charge as new Army chief
Top post- General Upendra Dwivedi (in the pic: standing on the right) took over as the 30th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the 1.3 million Indian Army on Sunday.
- He replaces General Manoj Pande who superannuated after more than four decades of service.
Who is he- Born on July 1, 1964, Lt Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into the Infantry (Jammu & Kashmir Rifles) of the Army on December 15, 1984.
- Like the Navy Chief Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, he is an alumnus of the Sainik School Rewa in Madhya Pradesh.
- Before this, Gen Dwivedi was serving as the Vice Chief of the Army.
- He has also served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command from 2022-2024.
- He has vast operational experience along the frontiers with China and Pakistan.
- He is married to Sunita Dwivedi, a science graduate and homemaker associated with Aarushi, an institute for special ability children in Bhopal. The couple has two daughters who work with NGOs.
Experience- Includes handling conventional operations, providing logistical support, and operating a Strike Corps in deserts.
- He contributed significantly to the military mecrenary's branch and the Military Operations Directorate at IHQ HQ (Army).
- As DG infantry, he fast-tracked capital procurement cases of weapons for all three services.
On top priority- Gen Dwivedi takes charge at a time India is facing various security challenges including along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
- He will also have to coordinate with the Navy and the Indian Air Force on the government’s ambitious plan to roll out theatre commands.
Predecessor- General Manoj Pande retired after serving 26 months as the chief.
- He was appointed on April 30, 2022 after serving as the vice chief of the Army staff.
- He was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) in December 1982.
- On June 1, 2021, Gen Pande had taken over the command of the Eastern Command.
- Before this appointment, he held the position of commander-in-chief, Andaman & Nicobar command (CINCAN).
