PANAJI: Goa has recorded a substantial increase in mackerel catch in 2023, according to the recent data released by the directorate of fisheries, indicating a bountiful year for the state’s fishing industry.
Mackerel production soared to 51,794 tonnes in 2023, a rise from 44,019 tonnes logged in 2022 and a leap from 22,128 tonnes registered over a decade ago in 2011.

Patterns of the decade’s data reveal that in 2014, production briefly dipped to 10,308 tonnes before steadily climbing in the following years. By 2017, the upward trajectory became more pronounced, reaching 29,511 tonnes, and continuing the ascent through 2022 and 2023.
“The surge in mackerel catch is seen as a positive indicator for local fisherfolk and seafood markets,” a fisheries department official said. “This record-breaking catch can be attributed to favourable oceanic conditions.”
However, there is a drastic reduction in some prominent seafood variants in Goa.
Oyster production, for instance, has seen a decline from 210 tonnes in 2019 to 43 tonnes in 2023. Oysters play an ecological role in filtering water and the decrease in production might be attributed to environmental factors affecting oyster beds. Similarly, mussels are important filter feeders that contribute to water quality. Mussel production has fluctuated moderately over the years, from 96 tonnes in 2019 to 38 tonnes in 2023.

But overall, the fisheries sector in Goa has witnessed a slight increase in production across marine and inland fisheries. In 2023, Goa reported marine fish production of 1,28,516 tonnes, up from 1,22,224 tonnes in 2022.
Prawn catch also rose, reaching 8,371 tonnes in 2023 compared to 4,011 tonnes the previous year. Despite the record high of 9,652 tonnes in 2017, the 2023 figures show a significant increase.
In addition to marine fish, inland fish production has also shown promising numbers. Species like ladyfish and catfish have seen consistent growth over the past five years, with 2023 recording notable increases in their production.
Ladyfish production rose to 721 tonnes from 639 tonnes in 2022. Catfish production has shown steady growth, reaching 671 tonnes in 2023 from 423 tonnes in 2019.
