Rahul Gandhi Manipur visit live: I urge PM Modi to visit Manipur, say Rahul during visit to Imphal

Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday criticized Congress MP and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi for visiting Manipur and said he is trying to politicize the issue. He said that as Rahul Gandhi has become a Leader of the Opposition, he is expected to behave responsibly.He further stated that there is a need to minimize the distance between the two communities, Meitei and Kuki, and Manipur needs ointments.

"I feel that it is important that the Prime Minister come here, listen to the people of Manipur, try & understand what is going on in Manipur. After all, Manipur is a proud state of the Indian Union...even if there was no tragedy, the Prime Minister should have come to Manipur. In this huge tragedy, I request the Prime Minister to take 1-2 days of his time and just come and listen to the people of Manipur. It will comfort the people of Manipur. We are, as the Congress party, ready to support anything that would improve the situation here."

We also expressed our displeasure, and said that we are not happy with the progress that has taken place here. I don't want to go further into politicising this issue, that's not my intention."

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Monday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur since ethnic violence erupted in the state in May last year and said party leader Rahul Gandhi has been highlighting the issues of the people of the northeastern state.

On the Manipur visit of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra says, "Rahul Gandhi visited the Jiribam district early in the morning today. Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi arrived in Assam on Monday to meet the flood-affected victims at a relief camp in Fulertal, Lakhipur.
The Congress leader arrived at Kumbhigram airport in Silchar district, in the morning and visited a flood relief camp in Lakhipur to interact with the displaced residents.

Rahul Gandhi received a heartfelt reception at Silchar Airport from leaders of Assam and Manipur.

After his visit to the relief camp at Fulertal in Assam, Rahul Gandhi proceeded to Manipur to visit relief camps at three different locations. The leader of the Opposition will also call upon the Manipur Governor this evening.

As per the current flood situation in Assam, 58 people have died and 53,429 are seeking refuge in shelter camps across the state. As many as 23.9 lakh people have been affected across 3,535 villages so far. 68,769 hectares of total crop area have been submerged.

114 animals, including 6 rhinos, have died in Kaziranga National Park, as per the report.

The State has witnessed killing of civilians, police and Army personnel for decades, while Congress was in power. In 1990, 300 people were killed. 1100 people died in 1993. 400 were killed in 1997 In 2001, 95 people died. 140 people were killed in 2003. In 2006, 105 people died. 200 people were killed in 2008. In 2010, 220 people died and 165 people died in 2012.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire in the Gularthal area of Manipur's Jiribam district in the early hours of Monday, officials said. Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is scheduled to visit relief camps in the district later in the day and meet victims of ethnic violence."Gunmen fired several rounds around 3:30 am towards the Meitei area of Gularthal, prompting security forces to retaliate. The exchange of fire continued till 7 am," an official said.Security personnel have been deployed in the surrounding areas as a preventive measure.One bulletproof vehicle of the state police also was hit by gunshots during the attack, the official said.

State Congress leaders in Manipur, including Manipur Congress president Keisham Meghachandra, are actively preparing for Rahul Gandhi's visit. Meghachandra, along with other party functionaries, has already left Imphal for Jiribam district to welcome Gandhi. Earlier, state Congress leaders held discussions regarding his visit. Meghachandra, Congress Legislature Party leader O Ibobi Singh, and two Congress MPs from the state, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and Alfred Kanngam Arthur, attended the meeting. "We are grateful that he chose to visit the state after being chosen as the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha," a Congress leader told PTI.

This is Rahul Gandhi's third visit to Manipur ever since the state blew up fourteen months ago. The non-biological PM has not found the time nor even had the inclination to visit Manipur even for a few hours after the grave crisis erupted on May 3rd, 2023. He has not even met the CM of the state - who happens to be from his own party - and other political leaders of the state including MLAs and MPs."
