Google is set to make India a key export hub for its Pixel smartphones, with plans to ship devices to Europe and the United States, MoneyControl reports. The tech giant will begin commercial production through partnerships with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies' subsidiary, Padget Electronics.
Trial production has already started in Tamil Nadu with Foxconn, which also assembles iPhones in India.
"Google is a large brand, which Dixon will add to its customer list in the second half of the year through its partnership with Compal. They will share the production with Foxconn," a source revealed to MoneyControl.
The production strategy involves Dixon Technologies manufacturing the base variant of Pixel phones, while Foxconn will handle the Pro variants. Commercial production is expected to commence in September, with exports following once production stabilises.
"Google will make a formal announcement in H2... they are committed to India. The initial plan is to serve Europe and going forward Google will address demand in the US with India-made Pixel smartphones," the source added.
This move aligns with the government's production-linked incentive (PLI) program, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing. "Since demand for Pixel smartphones is very low in India, Google plans to export most of the locally produced devices from Foxconn and Dixon facilities leveraging the PLI benefits," another source explained.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin recently confirmed the partnership, stating, "As a result of the negotiations, Google will partner with Foxconn in Tamil Nadu to produce the Pixel cellphones and has offered to set up a factory."
Google announced its plan to make Pixel phones in India in October 2023, starting with Pixel 8 and 8 Pro.
