We are delighted to share that Felicity Meyer, Consultant Vascular Surgeon based in Norfolk, has been elected as the next Chair of Women in Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. She will take up the position in September 2024, at the end of a successful three-year term for the current Chair, Tamzin Cuming. Commenting on the election results, Felicity said, "I am absolutely thrilled and humbled to be the first elected chair of Women in Surgery. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead but Tamzin Cuming leaves very big shoes to fill! I would like to thank her for all her hard work and support, especially around sexual safety, which has brought about wholesale change throughout the NHS." What is the prognosis of nasopalatine nerve severance during paediatric dental surgeries? This recent study in the #FDJ highlights key findings in 28 patients: 🔸 Severing the nasopalatine nerve during surgery on palatally impacted teeth in children does not result in long-term sensory issues. 🔸 Informed consent and discussion of risks remain crucial. 🔸 Uneventful healing is common, with any temporary paraesthesia typically resolving within months. Managing trauma in pregnant women presents unique challenges due to physiological changes and fetal considerations. In July's #Annals, we highlight a recent study surveying 125 acute NHS trusts in England and 6 in Wales, which revealed a lack of consistency in guidelines. This study found that: ▪️ 19% of trusts have specific guidelines for managing major trauma in pregnant women. ▪️ 7.9% have generic guidelines that include trauma management. ▪️ 69.8% routinely involve obstetrics in trauma calls, but only 36.5% involve paediatrics.
