Energy Update: 17 July 2024 UK AND NORTH SEA  What’s in store for energy in the King’s Speech? (Energy Live News)  Today marks the state opening of Parliament and the anticipated King’s Speech, where King Charles will deliver the government‘s agenda for the upcoming parliamentary session. This speech, crafted by the government, will unveil ambitious plans including a promised “new deal for working people” set to feature in an employment rights bill within the first 100 days of government. Among the legislative highlights are proposals for significant reforms in the railway sector and the establishment of Great British Energy – a state-owned entity aimed at investing in renewable energy projects such as offshore floating wind farms and clean hydrogen technologies. Notably, while it won’t directly supply energy to consumers, the firm is slated to generate power and manage renewable projects alongside private sector partners.

Energy Update: 16 July 2024 More than 700 business leaders demand Labour bases GB Energy in Aberdeen (Energy Voice) More than 700 Aberdeen business leaders have lined up to demand Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour bases its planned GB Energy firm in the city. The new UK Government has promised to create a publicly owned energy firm and has vowed that it will be headquartered in Scotland. Labour claims the company will create thousands of new jobs and help support the transition away from fossil fuels to renewables. But the prime minister has so far refused to name exactly where in Scotland GB Energy will be based. Now business chiefs have upped the pressure on Sir Keir to base the firm in Aberdeen given the city is a central hub for the energy sector. Leading businessmen such as Sir Ian Wood, Martin Gilbert and Douglas Craig are among the signatories.

Energy Update: 12 July 2024 UK AND NORTH SEA  UK government denies it has banned new North Sea drilling (Energy Voice)  The Government has denied claims that energy secretary Ed Miliband has acted to ban oil and gas companies from new drilling in the North Sea. And while the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) said it would stick to Labour’s manifesto pledge to end the issuing of new licences to drill oil and gas fields, it has rubbished claims that applications already made would be scrapped. Sources close to DESNZ insisted claims there had been an immediate North Sea oil ban were “inaccurate”.
