The Mix Connect

Education

A wellbeing support tool for schools; designed by young people for young people. Brought to you by The Mix and Shout.

About us

A new digital package for schools to support the mental health and wellbeing of their students, building on the tried and tested support channels and youth voice work of The Mix Charity and Shout. The Mix Connect is an easy-to-use tool that can be added to your school website or intranet that offers your pupils 24-hour access to youth focussed advice and information, peer support and a directory of local support services. The Mix Connect allows your pupils to access life-changing advice on their own terms. The service is free for students to use, anonymous and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It allows young people search for support in their own words, to browse a range of support options and find signposting to over 16,000 sources of local help. 81% of teachers believe mental health will be a barrier to learning in the next year (Pearsons, 2022). The Mix Connect is designed to support schools to help tackle this challenge in a cost-effective way. Firstly, a tool to be embedded on school websites or learning platforms that provides 24-hour access to information, signposting, and crisis support. Complimenting this, is the Ambassador Programme. A collection of resources and activities that empower students to add their voices to the mental health discourse. Designed by young people for young people, The Mix Connect promotes a culture of pro-activity to stop life challenges becoming wellbeing crises.

At The Mix Connect, we recognise the importance of providing a presence in schools and colleges when it comes to early intervention and prevention. By being on the front line, we can help educators to intervene by offering support and resources to students when they need them. The more we foster open discussions in education, the easier it becomes to destigmatise mental issues and create a culture of acceptance and understanding. If you are part of a college, school or organisation and you think this could be useful for you, you can reach out for more information.

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Morley College’s Chelsea campus yesterday to engage with their students and demonstrate The Mix Connect and its wellbeing support offering. During my visit, we discussed various aspects of The Mix Connect, including strategies for peer support and how to access resources both on and off campus. Big thank you to Vusa Nkomo, Valentina and the student services team for facilitating and organising. It’s always a pleasure to work with people so eager to improve the availability of wellbeing services in education. If you are part of a college, school or organisation looking to enhance wellbeing initiatives, please feel free to reach out.

‘What has been the best thing about being an Ambassador for The Mix Connect?’ ‘responsibility’ ‘helping others around me’ ‘making a difference’ We put this question to some of our wonderful Mix Connect ambassadors in schools and colleges across the UK and here’s what they had to say.

Wonderful to sit down with some of our Mix Connect ambassadors to talk about mental health support in education and why they chose to become ambassadors. Peer support is vital in education and these ambassadors are taking it upon themselves to start the conversation around mental health in their schools.

Today I had the privilege of taking our well-being student representatives to the campaign launch of ‘HERE4YOU. HERE4YOU is a 3 year campaign to help young people understand their mental health, how to support themselves, and how to support their peers. We were kindly invited by The Mix Charity one of the charity partners of the event alongside Shout UK YoungMinds Place2Be Mind and Joes Buddy Line. Not only did our representatives say how much they loved the short film (Roman Kemp, and the complimentary popcorn) they also took away some great skills to use in their role. To top it off they even conquered their fears and gave an interview to share how much they enjoyed the film. Hopefully you will catch them on a screen near you soon! Thank you so much to Andy Rayment for inviting us!

Last week, our Mix Connect team attended The Schools and Academies show in Birmingham to join the discussion around wellbeing support, the growing importance of a youth led approach and the role of Ed tech in schools. One key takeaway was the emphasis on the power of peer-to-peer support within the educational landscape. In an environment where education staff are already stretched, collaboration and fostering peer connections is paramount to the success of students. The Mix Connect’s commitment to collaboration and equipping educators and students with the necessary tools to champion mental health awareness is a significant addition to the education sector. We're looking forward to witnessing the continued positive impact of The Mix Connect and collaborating further to create nurturing environments where every individual can thrive! #edtechsummit #SchoolsAndAcademiesShow2023 https://lnkd.in/eYZhPpYU to learn more about The Mix Connect and the peer led opportunities!

🎓 Great to be involved in discussions on the forefront of education at the Schools and Academies Show last week 📚 Throughout the day I was able to experience a diverse array of conversation, highlighting the importance of a whole school approach, a focus on wellbeing and the need for peer-to-peer support within education. It was a pleasure to introduce so many people to the organisation I work for. It was also great to connect and to hear so many stories about the need for extra support within schools, especially from trusted organisations like The Mix. Looking forward to incorporating the many insights from the event and to continue raising awareness about The Mix’s peer led, digital support package, The Mix Connect. If anyone would like to follow up or discuss the event in more detail, please do reach out! #edtechsummit #schoolsandacademies

On Wednesday 22nd November The Mix will attend the The Schools & Academies Show in Birmingham for a day on innovation and inspiration. We're excited to absorb the wealth of knowledge and insights at the Schools and Academies Show, but more importantly, our focus will be to initiate conversations about prioritising mental health within educational institutions. The opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, to share insights and best practices regarding mental health resources and programs, is something we're eagerly looking forward to. If you would like to meet on the day to discuss The Mix’s educational support package, The Mix Connect, please don’t hesitate to reach out or contact our team at tmc@themix.org.uk
