Never - another Ken Follett Masterpiece
I read this book on the Pigeonhole app, one stave per day over 13 days, commenting along with other readers. Ken Follett is my all time favourite author so I was delighted to be given this opportunity ahead of publication day! I love how he writes in such detail, in a way that makes all his books interesting regardless of the subject. It doesn’t matter if it’s not my ‘normal’ genre, if it’s written by Ken Follett I’m guaranteed an enjoyable read! In his typical writing style, the book has different storylines which are intertwined. I also like how he uses strong female characters. The subject of this book is both terrifying and the stuff of nightmares; how a relatively minor incident can escalate internationally and have the potential for catastrophic consequences. This is a tense, action packed thriller right up until the very last page.

Scary, chilling, terrifying, shocking, exciting and thought-provoking, are just some of the adjectives that have been used to describe Ken Follett's "Never", but perhaps the most disturbing is plausible because Follett's story of retaliation, escalation and annihilation that follows when negotiation and diplomacy fail and pride and popularism carry the day is just that.

As ever Follett's writing is brilliant, well-researched, entertaining and unputdownable yet simultaneously frightening and sobering, amongst his contemporary novels this is possibly his best yet. Mixing three sub-plots and love-stories revolving around a covert operation against jihadist drug running in Saharan Africa seen through the eyes of two CIA's operatives, embassy girl Tamara Levit and undercover agent Abdul John Haddad; US electioneering and public opinion seen through the eyes of US President Pauling Greene; and the stand-off between the communist old guard and the emerging new leaders amongst the Chinese general secretary's politburo seen through the eyes of junior Intelligence Secretary Chan Kai Follett carefully and skilfully navigates his story from a terrorist attack in Saharan Africa to nuclear attacks between the USA and China.

For lovers of contemporary thrillers in the Tom Clancy or Frederick Forsyth mould this is a must read, but if you've come here by way of Follett's historical "Pillars of the Earth" Kingsbridge novels then perhaps be prepared to be disappointed, this is very different.

Brilliant writing. Could not put it down. The characters were well researched and the possible country’s in the plot showed substantial knowledge.
Three central stories were engrossing eventually leading to the climax. Three love affairs were carefully constructed .
This is what could happen in the ultimate end of what we know as today’s world.

Ken Follett is the best modern day writer of international possibilities of life undercover in the countries who hold the power in our world.

I haven't read Ken Follett for quite a few years but when Amazon showed me this book I couldn't resist it. As ever, with this author, there's a fairly large cast of characters, but so well done that I felt I knew each one. Clearly showing how individuals can lead their governments into war, the scenarios in this cleverly plotted story are heartbreakingly believable. I binge read this book as much as I could because it's a real page turner. I'm still thinking about the thought-provoking plot, the characters and the cliff-hanger ending, even though I've read two books since finishing this. A must-read for long-time fans of Ken Follett, and a superb introduction to his work if you don't yet know it.

I've never read any of Ken Follet's books, but this was a good story plot, however it loses a couple of stars because it is completely unfinished in so many ways. I don't know if that's meant to be the idea, but I just found it irritating and it reduced the believability of the story overall. Good read, disappointing ending.

All Follett’s thrillers are well-executed and this is no exception. Set in contemporary times, it shows how acts of violence in a remote area, far from the homelands of the world’s superpowers, can have far-reaching consequences.

The initial plot follows those caught up in a CIA operation to identify and destroy the African segment of a cocaine-trafficking operation. Islamic militants, led by a fanatic veteran of the Afghan wars, are using a people-smuggling route and a remote desert mining operation to transport cocaine from Guinea-Bissau on the west coast, via Chad and Libya into Europe. The profits fund the acquisition of Chinese-manufactured weapons, including artillery, from neighbouring Sudan. Allied intelligence agencies from the USA and France are running a brave undercover agent to identify each stage of the smuggling operation. The reader is soon immersed in the narrative of events involving the agent and his handlers.

So far it seems like classic Follett: derring-do with a side of romance, delivered with panache. The Islamists flex their muscle and stage an ambush at the Chadian border and amongst those killed is an American embassy guard. This triggers an official diplomatic complaint by Washington to Beijing. The two superpowers engage in a cautious diplomatic to-and-fro, including the use of back-channel communications between key intelligence operatives, but they fail to restrain their client states: Chad retaliates against Sudan, killing Chinese personnel. Step by step, violence breeds further violence.

Now a second plot develops. North Korea is running out of food supplies and a faction within the military is planning a coup against the Supreme Leader. This requires more diplomatic engagement. Again violence inevitably breeds violence and alpha male ‘hawks’ on all sides demand retaliation, escalating the situation and drawing the USA and China ever-closer to all-out war.

Follett delivers a master class of international intrigue and the steps, or mis-steps, that pose a danger to all. One quote sums it up for me: “A fool was just a fool, but a fool in the White House [or substitute any seat of political power] was a danger to all.”

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique story line
Reviewed in the United States on 22 March 2024
Ken Follett is one of the most prolific authors of over arcing series that I consider "must reads". He also has a significant number of stand alone stories that should come stamped with "BINGE READ" on the cover. His books cover so many differing eras and the series span huge pieces of history in many countries with immigrant history featuring in many of them. Follett is a "visual" writer. He skillfully paints the characters and communities in his books, making them very hard to forget. He does tend to pack alot of story into each of his books, this one is a little over 800 pages.

In the multinational thriller, NEVER, Follett splits the story into three world views as they work to stop those who would see a WWIII launch using nuclear weapons. As these three groups work their seperate goals, readers get a glimpse of prevailing politics as they set policy to aggravate the other parties instead of focusing on the immediate threat. The story line is full of tension and suspense, each battle could push the world powers into destroying sections of every country. This was an easy 5 star read, but then, Follett books usually are.

I reviewed one of Follett's books recently but this is far better. Probably, in my opinion, one of his best. It kept me engrossed all the way through, and I thought he'd turn it into a softer ending. He didn't. I take my hat off to him: it's a much better ending for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God, it’s only fiction
Reviewed in Germany on 16 June 2024
This is a well-constructed thriller with 3 storylines including covert operations in the Sahel zone against terrorists and drug trafficking and the fictional US President Pauline Greene and her government in Washington and the Chinese President and government in Beijing. Notwithstanding the national secret services of both governments are involved too. The story is divided into 5 chapters all with the acronym DEFCON as titles. DEFCON indicates the defence readiness condition of the US Armed Forces. At the beginning the US are at DEFCON 5, the lowest readiness status, and basically the state of peace with no immediate need to be on a high alert. This eventually changes after a few “incidents” and a lot of political manoeuvring between the two superpowers. Both governments are resolved not to let the situation escalate, but both parties must manage expectations of the public in the US and conservative party hard liners in Beijing. Certainly, the whole story is just fiction, but the story somehow inevitably accelerates and moves through the higher alert states up to DEFCON 1 with an imminent possibility of nuclear war. In the end the book creates a rather disconcerting feeling that mankind is nearer to doomsday and nuclear annihilation than previously thought.
