Great book- damaged by Amazon’s choice of inadequate packaging.
5 out of 5 stars
Great book- damaged by Amazon’s choice of inadequate packaging.
The book itself is stunning- beautiful edition with illustrations of the characters inside. It’s one of my favourite series of novels, so I wanted to get the special edition (I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since it came out!).Amazon sent it in inadequate packaging. I have returned two copies thus far with significant crunched in corners, each time feeding back that it needs to be packaged differently. This has been blatantly ignored, and it keeps being further damaged, and I keep having to go pop it into an Amazon locker. Added stress and faff that I wouldn’t have had I gone to a bookshop in the first place. So, in summary- it’s a beautiful edition. Go to Waterstones, pick up a copy off the shelf, and enjoy it with intact corners.

"Clockwork Angel" is the first of a new series of books called "The Infernal Devices," which is set in London during the Victorian Period and acts a kind of Prequel to the Mortal Instruments Trilogy. Though it's probably recommended to read The Mortal Instruments first before reading this, you don't have to since the two story-lines don't interweave in any way and the fantasy elements are explained really clearly again in the first few chapters of the book.

The plot revolves around Tessa Gray, a sixteen-year-old girl, who journeys from New York to London to live with her older brother Nathaniel, after the death of her Aunt, her one sole guardian. However on arriving she is meet by the strange and mysterious Dark Sisters and their coachman who insist that they were sent by her brother to collect her and it soon turns out that the sisters have a terrible fate in store for Tessa. They keep her prisoner while trying to train her to harness a unique power that she never knew she had, a power that makes her one of the most hunted people in the city. Soon Tessa is introduced to the Downworld of London, a place of warlocks, fey, vampires, werewolves and of course the Shadowhunters, a group of warriors whom she later seeks refuge with.

Cassandra Clare is quickly becoming my favorite author and with her latest book, it's not hard to see why. As all her books, "Clockwork Angel" is highly addictive. The plot is engrossing and filled with so many unexpected twists that you don't expect, none of which I want to give away. The fantasy elements are also really well done, so that it still fits within the realistic setting of Victorian London and doesn't become too overwhelming but the best part of the book has to be the characters. Clare has a wonderful talent in making you love and care for her characters in only a couple of chapters. All of them are fleshed out, with secrets, histories and motives for everything they do, even the minor characters all have an important part to play but each uniquely different. The most infuriating character of all has to be the handsome yet morally corrupt Will Herondale, who is similar to Jace, since Clare has raised so many questions about his elusive past and motives. One of the biggest mysteries which I look forward to seeing revealed is that of Tessa who is also a very likable and believable heroine who though strong and brave also likes to fantasize about her most loved novels and characters as plenty of teenage girls would do.

I also love the way Clare develops romance in her novels sine it is not cliched or quick with an instant connection with first sight, rather more, it develops slowly so that it becomes believable. Being the first book, there is some romantic elements but the characters are developing more as friends
Clare paints the time period nicely as well, though don't count on it being very geographically accurate, as there is more emphasis on atmosphere that she evokes of the setting rather than the historical facts. The writing is also well done and improves with each novel she writes though the novel really primarily is a work of YA fiction.

So if you're looking for a fun light read and well-written escapism fiction then this really is the book. Just sit back, relax and enjoy reading it.

I read the back of this book, after having read Cassandra Clare's previous books, thinking "Hmm, not sure that sounds much good". I couldn't remember a great deal about her other series having read it so long ago so dithered about whether I'd be wasting my time on this one. And I certainly did lose a good few hours over this book - but they definitely weren't wasted!

Here's what it's about:

Tessa Gray, a sixteen year old american, receives a free ticket from her brother to meet him in England where he is currently working. After the death of her Aunt, and only family member aside from her brother, Tessa really has no choice but to accept (plus she's missed him quite a bit). But all is not what it seems in London, after being left with "The dark sisters" Tessa discovers her world is not what it seems - and neither is she!

It's really difficult to give an overview of the book without spoiling it, which explains the fairly dull blurb. Essentially the world Tessa lives in is very similar to the the previous world we are already familiar with from the previous series. I think it's important to note that you really don't need to have read the previous series, although a couple of the characters rolled over into this series I couldn't remember a thing about them and neither did I need to.

So what about the characters? So often we have a typical boy meets girl romance right? Well that's what's so great about Cassandra Clare - there's no such thing as a typical romance in her books. There's a bit of love triangle actually which is great - I definitely couldn't pick if I were in Tessa's position. But the thing is, even Tessa rarely gets to choose. The characters blow hot and cold so often that most of the time I was so frustrated - Clare really is a fantastic tension builder. The "additional" characters, the ones that feature but aren't hugely important, are equally exciting. There are quite a few back stories to each character that we get tiny little glimpses of now and then which I especially liked. There was so many questions running through my mind whilst reading this book and we're slowly drip fed the answers - but of course the next book has all the juicy details I imagine.

So do I recommend this? Oh without a doubt, if you don't go out and get one of these straight away then you're seriously missing out. Just fantastic - read this immediately!

Tenho mil frases marcadas q me tocaram profundamente.

Aditi Kandhari
5.0 out of 5 stars An epic Shadowhunter novel
Reviewed in India on 12 December 2020
Read The Infernal Devices they said. You will enjoy it they said. Hmm, did it live upto the hype? It absolutely did. I DEVOURED this book!!

The book is set in Victorian London and the setting is adequately described. Not once did I feel there was too much of info dump or too less of it. The writing style was exceptional and way better than that of TMI. I feel that the author has come a long way and has definitely evolved. So if you are not a big fan of TMI, give this one a try!
The plot is interesting and engaging. Yes, the romance is said to play its part and this series has some famous pairs but it didn't overpower the main plot going or was forced. It felt natural and I feel that the author let it evolve naturally. There are some twists and turns but overall I feel that it was well written.
One thing that makes me adore this is that it makes you ask a lot of questions from page one. Are they answered? yes. Do more come up? Also yes. I enjoy when there is something about the book that makes you look forward to reading it and the next book that there is. There were these mysteries in Clockwork Angel that kept me guessing and hooked. It ends with a cliffhanger and left me with questions that make me want to read the next book at this very moment.

I feel that the thing about Cassandra Clare's books is that the plot might not be that great but the characters are brilliant. Whatever shortage there might be in the story, the characters make up for it. All of the characters are unique and have distinct personalities and opinions.
I loved Will, he makes me want to strangle and marry him at the same time, exactly my type. Tessa and Jem were very easily likeable and straight on amazing. I appreciated that all the characters contributed to the story and played a significant role. And i am also hoping for character development for some of them in the upcoming books. So if you are looking for characters that would leave an imprint on you with an exciting plot, do pick this up!
