Munich Wolf Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

Munich, 1935 - The Bavarian capital is a magnet for young, aristocratic Britons who come to learn German, swim in the lakes and drink beer in the cellars.

What they don't see - or choose to ignore - is the brutal underbelly of the Nazi movement which considers Munich its spiritual home.

When a high-born English girl is murdered, Detective Sebastian Wolff is ordered to solve the crime. Wolff is already walking a tight line between doing his job and falling foul of the political party he abhors. Now Hitler is taking a personal interest in the case.

Followed by the secret police and threatened by his own son, a fervent member of the Hitler Youth, the stakes have never been higher. And when Wolff begins to suspect that the killer might be linked to the highest reaches of the Nazi hierarchy, he fears his task is simply impossible - and that he might become the next victim.

Review

Rory Clements combines the talents of a superb storyteller with the unerring eye of a first-rate historian. His new novel Munich Wolf is a murder investigation with international political implications set in Hitler's Munich. Clements's depiction of Munich in the dark and frightening summer of 1935 - with its salons and beer halls, cafés and restaurants favoured by Hitler and his intimate coteries, and the seamy clubs and extravagant parties favoured by SS officers and the overly indulged and uninhibited daughters of English aristocrats - are so accurate and vivid that you will think you have been transported back to this highly-charged time in the Bavarian capital city. ― Dr David I Hall, author of Hitler’s Munich: The Capital of the Nazi Movement

refreshing take on a thriller with more of a historical fiction feel
A stand-alone set in 1930s Munich at the rise of Hitler and Nazi ideals, this book was a refreshing take on a thriller with more of a historical fiction feel. We follow Sebastian Wolff, a murder detective in the Munich Police, who after being imprisoned briefly in one of the camps, Dachau, and witnesses the brutality that occurs there, he is asked to investigate the murder of an English woman, with orders from Hitler to close the case as quickly as possible.Despite anti-Semitic views and characters determined to sway the conclusions and suspects, including having to work with the very officer that sent him to Dachau, Wolff is determined to find out the truth, despite the case being solved. Willing to risk his relationship with his son, a member of the Hitler Youth, his job, and his life, Wolff refuses to rest until he has got to the very bottom of this case. This book was incredibly well-researched, with the historical timeline fitting within the novel, Nazi movements and views at the very foundation of this text, allowing the reader a further insight into how life was during this period for Bavarians, Germans and Jewish members of society. This story is dark and brutal, not shying away from experiences, attitudes and violence faced by a multitude of characters, not just our murder victims, giving its readers the full experience. A truly compelling read, with a plot and a detective with a moral code that made this book difficult to put down. The suspense built throughout this book, with high up officials determined to close the case that as a reader I was desperate to find out more about, stopped me from thinking about anything else!Fans of historical fiction, thrillers and world war history should definitely check this book out.

I have read the Tom Wilde series from this author and absolutely loved them. I love the way the author intermingles real and fictional characters together and was pleased that his new novel was available and it did not disappoint at all, it’s a fantastic read.
The book really captures the atmosphere of the time and is an outstanding detective story.
Hopefully this isn’t Sebastian Wolff’s only outing and Mr Clements will continue with more stories in the future.

Great read. Seems historical accurate and gives a good sense of pre war nazi Germany. Riveting plot and interesting characters. One small gripe. As with the Tom Wilde books the dialogue is a bit off putting at times. Most of the characters, even the German ones, use very "haughty" English language. "I rather think" for example. But the book was rather excellent overall.

Fast moving and entertaining thriller, albeit like most such it strains credibility about the progress and fate of its hero. For this reader, its particular merit was filling in the texture and complex detail of the Nazi regime and its British connections in its Munich and Bavarian 'homeland' in the 1930s

What a thrilling read, I couldn't wait to get home from work to finish this fantastic book. The author did a great job of taking me back to 30,s Munich, a scary time for people who had a mind of their own. Really gripping story, hope this is the first of many Wolf novels.

This was an incredibly gripping thriller. The characters so real by the end of the book I felt disappointed that it was over. I really hope there are more books to come with Inspector Wolff.

Clements knows how to craft a story, Munich Wolf was an engrossing read, with relatable characters that exemplified the 1930’s Germany as Hitler’s rise to power was consolidating. Brilliant script, as historical figures are captured within the narrative that provides a snap shot of pre-war Munich. Look forward to the next adventure.

RC has done it again with this fictional story which contains a fair element of fact. Set in pre WW11 in Munich, much of the facts relate to the people and places in this prelude to the German, Hitler, Nazi world war. Fast moving and full of twists and turns, an excellent read as the heading suggests. Well done, RC.
