Great Britain?: How We Get Our Future Back Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

Brought to you by Penguin.

We all want to know what on earth is going on. Why real wages are flatlining but taxes are rising, and public services are still collapsing. Why our children can’t afford a house and our neighbours are using foodbanks. We are all yearning for a way out of the repeated economic crises, generational divisions and political dysfunction that dominate our lives. Most of all we want our – and Britain’s – future back.

Great Britain? is a much-needed antidote to the pervading sense that Britain is going backwards rather than forwards. It is both a clear-eyed and rigorous diagnosis of the problems facing our country – a unique toxicity of huge inequality and stagnant economic growth – and a hopeful case for reclaiming a different future: by building an investment nation of good work, resilient communities and secure homes, a society in which both burdens and prosperity are shared. As Torsten Bell shows in his bold vision for the alternative, the Britain of today contains the raw materials to build a better Britain for tomorrow.

In this treasure trove of analysis, Bell argues that our era of crisis and cynicism needs neither utopia nor nostalgia, but a practical patriotism of radical incrementalism to raise the living standards of middle- and lower-income households. He expertly and passionately points us towards a Britain that we can actually build – a future worth fighting for.

Bell states the obvious, “Britain is a country in decline. It has been in decline for well over a decade”. In his book, he describes the symptoms of decline and traces the toxic combination from the inequality that began in the 1980s to the slow growth in the new century. Bell discusses the problems of working too much and working too little – Britain has both these problems. Bell also focusses on the housing problem that has emerged and will only grow bigger if nothing is done. This book is timely because it was published just before the July 2024 general elections that has just seen Labour winning by a landslide.
In projecting hope in the future, Bell warns against the “zero-sum” trap – the belief that gains for one group will only come at the expense of another. He is hoping for a “Team Britain”. His vision is spelt out in his chapter, “A Future Reclaimed”. A down payment by way of investing wisely on those with lower income is needed, but this is a long investment. The new government may find useful insight here.

This basically answers all the discussions that you might have had with colleagues and friends as to why average young to middle aged people's living standards (ours in this case!) are in long-term decline in the UK. Compares with other OECD countries (which is quite depressing). And then suggests practical remedies for reversing this trend. Fascinating read. Until it's laid out in bare facts how much we have lost compared to other countries you don't realise how awful the last 15 years has been. Have already got someone who wants to borrow it.

This is a really clear and concise summary of the current state of the UK. It is unflinching in its diagnosis of the problems we face, and which ones really matter to people’s lives. But it also has practical ideas for ways to make things better, and examples of ways to make really tangible progress for the next government. Very readable and accessible as well.

This book appeared highly rated and was recommended by an other booksellers email. While it contains some useful information, it really doesn't have any new insights and was a disappointment. Data presentation appears to be highly selective to conform to the authors viewpoint.

This is not just a critique of the low growth, high inequality state of the U.K. it also gives pragmatic ideas in how to make things better.

The timing is great - expect a lot of these ideas to be used if there is a change of government in the next to few weeks.

Given the reviews and the fact that Bell is regarded as the rising star in Labour and is something of a policy guru. one expected a great deal more than is delivered in this book. The analysis is good but
he policies and solutions that he puts forward to deal with them are just not that interesting, innovative or when it comes to housing even well-thought out. The latter is basically build come what may - essentially a right-wing idea - and ignore the environment (partly because he thinks in terms of the UK - lots of empty spaces in the mountains and hills of Wales and Scotland - and not England - which has few) and all those architects, urban planners and recent authors who have detail the housing crisis and possible, workable solutions. He is a prime example of those centre leaning policy wonks who, as Martin Heidegger identified, lay out things which are 'correct' but are not 'true'. There is a difference. Strangely, he has little - except bland statements - to say on climate change and is clearly -and perhaps even proudly -not a green. Will be interesting to see if his ideas are taken up by the government because this is very disappointing.

Very little recognition of the immense changes caused by mass immigration and the effect on the price of labour and supply of housing.²
