There's a feeling of uncertainty that pervades the book. Bob is often tentative, and this makes the sympathetic reader, who is inevitably aware of the author, tend to be on the author's side and wish him to win through. And he often does. The plot develops in a way which is understandably humorous, given the author, but at the same time, development is both natural and puzzling, as it would be in real life. Where he falls down is when the question of violence, danger, comes in as a plot element. Here, one wonders, fearfully, if Bob will go "real" and horrify us with some actual violence/death. He doesn't. In one way, a great relief. In another, some sort of let down. Either way, it keeps the readers' attention. To get a true reaction to the actual worth of this novel, the author probably would have done better to publish under a pseudonym. As it is, one is aware of Bob "reading over your shoulder" and he's such a nice guy you can't help saying "it's good".
