In a remote 1940s Australian monastery, Sister Eileen (Cate Blanchett), a rebellious nun, oversees a mission for indigenous Australian children. One night a boy with extraordinary abilities arrives. The monastery comes into possession of a sacred relic, the boy's encounter with it captivates him. But his Indigenous spirituality clashes with Sister Eileen's teachings and his enigmatic powers.
