The Ring Siren is an important part of a Ring alarm, so its surprising that it hasn't been available for as long as the alarm system it supports. But its here now, and many people are glad for it.Positives:An external siren with sounder and LED red lights that flash on break-inVarious power options (but see Negatives too)Physical fitting made easy (but again, see negatives)Ready to go out of the boxAdjustable sound outputAdjustable timer for soundNegativesMany options not clearly explainedRing logo illuminates but only if hardwired or if solar panel fitted (or if Ring Battery pack fitted but not recommended)Hardwiring increases the cost and makes fitting a lot harderPossible connection problemsOn delivery, you will get a Ring External Siren with 3 x D-Cell Duracell batteries fitted. The siren can be used with just this power option and Ring quote a life of "up to 3 years". But of course usage and temperature can affect this a great deal. So you have the options of adding a Ring Rechargeable Battery.Adding a Ring Rechargeable Battery moves the D-Cell batteries in to "Back-up Battery" mode. The Siren uses the Ring Battery Pack as its main power source. This is likely to increase the time needed between battery swaps, but unfortunately Ring has not tested this option as asking them basically gets you a very poorly and carefully worded 'we've not tested it so we don't know' response. The app shows the individual battery levels, so you will know when to change or recharge the batteries, but it seems how long they will last is anybody's guess. What I can tell you is if you activate the "Dusk-to-Dawn" feature (a feature only available when buying in to power options greater than just the D-Cell power supplied in the box) The Rechargeable battery will last only 1-2 weeks before it needs recharging. So if you are fitting the box up high and need ladders to reach it, which lets face it is the only realistic option if you are fitting this device so it cannot be maliciously 'deactivated' by a burglar, factor in needing to access it fortnightly to recharge the battery (takes circa 12 hours) if you use Dawn-to-Dusk.Using the Siren with a Ring battery pack and D-Cells but without Dawn-to-Dusk will likely see the Siren lasting *more than the "up to 3 years" than just having the D-Cells. All rather unacceptable really. So the next option is to buy either a Solar Panel, or Hardwire it with a Ring Mains adapter. In fact, it is theoretically possible to add both the Solar Panel and a Mains Adaptor as the power ports are different for these additions. The Mains Adaptor is the same one as used for the Ring Doorbell and comes with 6 metres of cable and fork connectors. This option is tricky to install for several reasons:1 - You need to drill a hole in your wall (anything from 5" up dependent on whether you have a single brick wall, cavity walls or solid stone) so you are likely to need a really good drill and a long drill bit, all adding to the cost.2 - Feeding the cable through the aforementioned hole then leaves you needing to thread it through the backplate of the siren and through a grommet not really suitable for threading anything other than a bare cable through before using a screwdriver to secure the connectors to the siren connections point. All this several metre up on a ladder where it is recommended you have "three points of contact with the ladder at all times". Not really possible.I decided to go my own way and bought 8 metres of bog standard speaker cable which I fitted to the siren on the ground. I drilled the holes for the cable and the backplate, fitted the backplate, and began to feed the speaker cable through the hole before slotting the siren onto the backplate. Much easier!Of course there is the option of the Solar Panel. This removes the need to drill a hole, and it more sensibly comes with a plug you just push in. So that begs the question why they couldn't use the same for the Mains Adaptor. But the Solar Panel looks a bit Heath Robinson and not so "professional looking" to be honest, but that's just my opinion.Using a Solar Panel without a Ring Battery Pack can't be done as there would be nothing to keep charged.Using the Mains Adaptor is the clear winner for power supply as its more constant. You don't need the Ring Battery Pack unless you want an extra backup. But if you do, you can use the Dawn-to-Dusk feature without worry as the backup battery will be constantly charged from the mains, and if that fails, the Ring Battery Pack takes over, and when that's gone, the D-Cells are still online to take over from that. Without the Ring Battery Pack you use the D-Cell batteries as a Backup and Dawn-to-Dusk will turn off during the power outage. The Solar Panel option only really works if you are south facing, or not using the Dawn-to-Dusk function. So despite the siren being a good option to have, it needed a bit more thought as to how to power it. Mainly the Hardwire Mains Adaptor option really needed to be on a plug and socket rather than screw-down connectors. Also, options of purchasing a "Battery powered Siren" or a "Siren including Hardwire Kit" would be good.Adding this Siren to an existing Ring Alarm System could be tricky if you have a new build house with foil insulation as it could block the Z-Wave signal. At best you might get away with moving the Extender closer to where the Siren is located. Or you might need to buy a second Extender. The worst option is you might need to move the Siren to somewhere the Base Station or Extender can see the Siren better so its a good idea to test the placement before you drill the holes to fit it.Overall, its a great addition to the range, and everyone should have one, but bear in mind its likely to be a bit trickier to fit that all the other bits an pieces you fitted so far.Oh, and if like me, you live in Ireland, you cannot buy Ring Rechargeable Battery Packs from Amazon. I don't understand why as you can buy Ring Cameras and Doorbells containing the same battery, but just not the individual packs. You will need to order this directly from the Ring website. Shame on you Amazon. So to be a lot clearer, the options are:1 - D-Cell batteries only: Lasts "up to 3 years", no Dawn-to-Dusk feature available.2 - Add Ring Battery Pack: Allows Dawn-to-Dusk, but needs to be recharged every 7-14 days (cannot be done without removing the siren (a total of 4 screws).3 - D-Cells, Battery Pack and Solar Panel: Dawn-to-Dusk available but be aware of north facing panel and/or winter potentially reducing the time Dawn-to-Dusk works.4 - D-Cells and Mains Hardwire - Dawn-to-Dusk available when power is on only.5 - D-Cells, Battery Pack and Mains Hardwire - Dawn-to-Dusk even during a power cut.6 - D-Cells, Battery Pack, Mains Hardware and Solar Panel: Possible, but over the top.You must have D-Cells fitted all the time regardless of any other power supply options fitted.

Like every other RING device this is quite easy to install and is a good edition to the RING alarm system.
The kit itself includes a drilling guide for installing the device which is tricky to sort at first however once installed the device is great.

Only downside is that out of the box the siren comes with large disposable batteries which whilst long-lasting this actually keeps a key feature of the siren locked away.
The siren itself can be illuminated when the alarm system is activated however this is only possible if the siren is either wired into the mains or has a RING rechargeable battery installed (which is sold separately).

**Update after almost two years, siren still going strong and the 3 D batteries and 1 ring rechargeable battery are all still showing full state of charge, I don't have the logo illuminated at night but is good to see the batteries all still doing well***

**Update Oct 23 - D batteries and ring rechargeable battery pack still showing full**

Have had the Ring doorbell and gen 1 alarm since Christmas, I did wonder if we would see a dummy alarm siren when I purchased it, the fact that this is a working siren with LEDs is a bonus.
It’s quite a substantial piece of kit, especially once the D batteries are installed, we also have the removable battery pack installed.
Upon arrival, the Ring packaging looked very good, so good that I almost didn’t find the wall mounting kit (which is in a section of the inner cardboard packaging) once removed from all packaging, you need to remove the screw at the bottom of the unit (which is retained) then remove the wall mounting plate, once this is removed you loosen the three screws on the battery cover and slide the cover up to remove, you can then start the set up process within the app before pulling the battery tab. Setup on mine was completed without issue.
You then mount the backing plate in the location you wish to have the siren mounted (best to check WiFi coverage before securing) you then have the choice of using just the included D batteries or with a combination a battery pack, a solar panel or DC hardwire, important to note that if you only use the D batteries the alarm will function normally with the exception of the dusk to dawn illumination, any additional power source will give you that function.
A couple of reviews have mentioned it being quite difficult to attach the siren to the mounting plate once wall mounted, it’s a snug fit although this should prevent false anti tamper alerts.
Once completed , you can carry out an LED test (very bright red LEDs all around the siren) or an LED and Siren test (Siren has different volume levels from silent to Loudest), you can also configure the dusk to dawn illumination, although I did try it I don’t think we will use it, the siren is quite prominent in a well lit street anyway.
Should you buy it? There are those that say alarms are a waste of time, maybe they are, although I think I would rather be the only house in the street with an alarm than the only house in the street without an alarm, the Ring system was basically an invisible alarm up till now, however the siren now makes it a more visible deterrent, it’s actually quite stylish too.

Edit: for those wondering about the battery life, apparently the D batteries will last up to 3 years based on alarm being activated 4 time per year, Ring also state that the rechargeable battery pack will last around 3 weeks with the dusk to dawn light enabled.

The Ring products look and feel great quality, and all are straight forward to understand, fit, and set up in the app. We have doorbell, exterior/interior cameras, and security system with exterior siren. There are no real difficulties if you are a reasonable DIY'er, and the only issue I had was the siren. I wanted the hard-wired option for it, so bought the plug in adaptor. The wires of this not are not marked plus & minus, and they do have to be connected the right way round on the siren!

Been waiting for the outdoor siren to finally complete the alarm system. Had the siren installed by an electrician. We had an old alarm system still wired in (hadn't been used in years) so the electrician disconnected all wires (which would have connected to the old sensors around the house) from the box in our airing cupboard and just left the "SAB" wire connections in place (this was the wire which ran to the old alarm box on front of house). Tested for correct voltage and DC power from the transformer on our alarm box in airing cupboard and they were correct to siren specifications. In effect the old alarm box in the airing cupboard is the transformer used to power the siren now. This cut out the need to buy any adaptors or install any other power supply needed to hardwire.
Electrician said it was a little fiddly to install up a ladder especially with the little screws. All done though in about 45 mins.
We installed the ring quick release battery pack and this is kept charged up once you hardwire the siren in (even though it doesn't show as charging in the app).
We have pebble dashing on the wall which the siren was installed on and had trouble with "tamper" showing in the app. Electrician rectified this by going back up the ladder and adjusting the screw on the tamper arm. Seen from the reviews on here this was a problem for people installing on an uneven wall, the instructions don't mention the screw on the tamper arm so thought I'd mention it as it may help others.
Set up was nice and easy in the app and looks great on the house.
