How do you replace a former Premier League-winning goalkeeper with international pedigree?

    Go and sign another.

When Joe Hart announced he would be retiring at the end of the season, there was some concern from fans about the calibre of shot-stopper Celtic would be able to replace him with.

There aren't too many quality, experienced goalkeepers on offer.

As it transpired, there was no need to fear; Brendan Rodgers had a man in mind and he got him - Kasper Schmeichel.

A successful international, with a Premier League and FA Cup medal on his mantlepiece, he's a man used to the big stage.

It's a signing which has excited fans, and his team-mates are also looking forward to linking up with their new number one.

"It’s a massive signing for us," Greg Taylor said of the Denmark captain's arrival.

"Joe Hart was a great servant to the club and a great guy to have around the place, so hopefully that’s what we’ve got again"

Despite not yet meeting him, James Forrest too is looking forward to welcoming a new face through the doors.

"The gaffer’s had him at Leicester before and obviously Joe has spoken about him a few times and very highly of him, so everyone is looking forward to meeting and playing alongside him," he added.

Another member of Schmeichel's new defensive unit, Anthony Ralston said: "He’ll be a great addition to the team."

"Obviously everybody loved Joe and he did amazing things for the club, so to have Kasper in now he’ll be a great addition to the squad and we wish him all the best."

But perhaps centre-back Liam Scales summed it up best adding: "If you could go and get a like for like, he’s the one.

"You’re losing out on an international and a Premier League winner, but then you’re getting another one in so we’re really looking forward to greeting him and playing with him."

Brendan Rodgers has his man as the Celtic manager has reunited with Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The 37-year-old has penned a one-year deal with the Scottish Premiership champions after spending a season with Anderlecht in Belgium.

The Dane, who has over 100 caps for his country and played four times at Euro 2024, won the Premier League with Leicester City before becoming an FA Cup winner under Rodgers five years later.

“I am really pleased to bring Kasper to Celtic," Rodgers told the club's website.

"He is a real quality keeper and someone with the ability and personality to be great for us.

“He is a guy I trust and someone who knows how to win. He lives for football and he is coming to a club where he will feel the same passion that he has for the game.

  9. Sun in Scotland? Postecoglou left perplexed...published at 12:01 18 July

    Ange PostecoglouImage source, SNS

Anyone lurking around Celtic Park thinking a certain former manager might pop up after he had a game in Edinburgh last night?

Well, sorry to burst any bubbles, Ange Postecoglou won't be pitching up at Parkhead today.

His Tottenham Hotspur side were in action on Wednesday as they took on Hearts in their first pre-season game of the summer and it was a successful return to Scotland for the Australian.

A 5-1 win at Tynecastle brought the odd smile to his face, but it was the shock at the sunshine that caught him most off-guard.

"It seems like the weather has brightened up since I left, it's a beautiful day here today," he told BBC Scotland.

But while he enjoyed his return north of the border, it was short-lived as he admitted Spurs were travelling straight back down south.

When asked if he had a trip along the M8 planned he replied, "No unfortunately, it would've been nice."

The former Celtic boss also ruled out any knowledge of links to the vacant England job, stressing he had "no idea" of the speculation doing the rounds.

Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup is planning for life with Celtic target Adam Idah.

The Republic of Ireland striker made his return for the English Championship side in their friendly defeat to Club Bruges on Wednesday.

Celtic have had a bid rejected to permanently sign the 23-year-old, who had impressive loan spell in Scotland in the second half of last season.

"It's nice to have him back, he will be a valuable player for us," new Norwich boss Thorup told club media.

"He's been a part of the group for a little over a week. It was important for us to get him started and important for him to have some minutes.

"[During his performance] we saw what he can support this team with."

    Johnny KennyImage source, Getty Images

On-loan Celtic striker Jonny Kenny fired Shamrock Rovers through to a Champions League second qualifying round tie against Sparta Prague.

The 21-year-old netted a double as the Dublin side held on with 10 men to complete a 2-1 win over Vikingur Reykjavik.

Rovers seized control early on as Kenny scored twice in the opening 20 minutes before substitute Nikolaj Hansen got a goal back for the Icelandic visitors on the hour.

Just as in the goalless first leg, Shamrock finished with 10 men as Jack Byrne collected a second booking, but they held on for a lucrative win thanks to Hansen's penalty miss.

Kenny, who joined Celtic from Sligo Rovers on a five-year deal in January 2022, has yet to make his first-team debut for the Scottish champions.

The striker is now in his second successive season on loan at Shamrock Rovers and has netted 17 goals in 56 appearances for the Irish club.

    Viljami SinisaloImage source, SNS

Newly-signed goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo can't wait to be part of the Celtic "project" under Brendan Rodgers.

The Finland international has left Aston Villa to join the Glasgow club on a five-year deal.

"It feels amazing," the 22-year-old told CelticTV, external.

"It’s an opportunity I can’t turn down and it’s something I was looking forward to as soon as I heard of the interest."

"I’ve been told about a project for myself and for the football club and I’m excited to join that.

"Hopefully the fans can see a lot more of me over the next couple of years. It’s a project that’s got me here and I’m really excited for it."

Sinisalo says the opportunity to learn from Rodgers was a big attraction.

"It’s not often you work under great managers such as him," he said.

"I talked to him and the way he spoke about me, how much I felt like he wanted me here, that was what really drew me to come here.

"I can’t speak highly enough of him and I’m really excited to work under him."
