Joanna Gaines (born April 19, 1978, Wichita, Kansas, U.S.) is an American entrepreneur and decorator who founded (2003) with her husband, Chip Gaines, the lifestyle brand Magnolia, which includes home furnishings, a TV network, a magazine, and a real-estate company. The couple first gained attention for their home-improvement show Fixer Upper (2013–18) on HGTV.

Early life and education

Joanna Stevens is the middle daughter of Nan Stevens, a Korean immigrant, and Jerry Stevens, born in the United States of Lebanese and German ancestry; the couple met when Jerry Stevens was stationed in Seoul while serving in the U.S. Army. He later worked for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, and the family lived in several places before settling in Texas. During this time Joanna Stevens was often teased as the only Asian American in her school. However, in her junior year of high school—by which time the family was in Waco, Texas—she was named homecoming queen.

Stevens studied communications at Baylor University, and during her senior year she had an internship on the TV show 48 Hours, anchored by Dan Rather, in New York City. In 2001 she graduated from Baylor, and that year she met Chip Gaines at her father’s auto shop in Waco. On one of their early dates, Gaines climbed a magnolia tree and gave her a blossom; that incident inspired their brand name. The couple married in 2003 and has five children.

Magnolia and Fixer Upper

Shortly after their wedding, Joanna Gaines joined her husband’s house-flipping business. While he worked on the renovations, she (without any formal training) handled the decorating. Also in 2003 the couple opened Magnolia Market, a store that sold various home goods. Despite financial struggles, the couple remained committed to their work. During this time Joanna Gaines began a blog, and one of her posts caught the eye of an executive at a TV production company, who suggested that the couple film a short video for a potential show. HGTV saw the “sizzle reel” and added the program to its lineup. Eventually named Fixer Upper, the series featured the duo helping clients find a house and then renovate it. The show debuted in 2013 and became a huge hit. Its immense appeal was partly due to the interplay between the couple; while Joanna Gaines was pragmatic and more low-key, Chip Gaines was impulsive and boisterous. Their relationship as well as their family life—the couple’s children often made appearances—had authenticity that resonated with viewers. In addition, Joanna Gaines’s design style, which became known as “modern farmhouse,” was highly influential and often imitated. Simple and fresh, it favoured neutral colours and existing structural elements—such as shiplap—while introducing industrial accents.

Backed by the show’s success, the couple began expanding Magnolia. They bought land featuring two silos in Waco, hoping to create “a place that encourages people to see and create beauty in their everyday lives.” In 2015 Magnolia Market at the Silos opened, and the complex later included other retail stores, a bakery, a coffee shop, and a church. Elsewhere in the Waco area the couple opened a restaurant and offered several rental properties. The various enterprises made Waco a popular tourist destination. In addition, in 2016 the furniture collection Magnolia Home and the quarterly magazine The Magnolia Journal were launched. The following year the couple introduced Hearth & Hand with Magnolia, a collaboration with the retailer Target.

Magnolia Network and other activities

In 2018 the couple ended Fixer Upper. Three years later they premiered Fixer Upper: Welcome Home. Also in 2021 the cooking show Magnolia Table with Joanna Gaines began airing. During this time the couple developed a TV channel, and Magnolia Network debuted in 2022. Its shows typically centre on home improvements and repairs, gardening, and cooking. The couple also developed other spin-offs in the Fixer Upper franchise; notably, the six-episode Fixer Upper: The Castle appeared in 2022.

In The Stories We Tell: Every Piece of Your Story Matters (2022), she discusses various events in her life that have had particular significance. Gaines also wrote several children’s books.
