The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations, both for domestic and international tourists alike. With sparkling blue water, pristine sand, and excellent waves the 60 km stretch of beaches is a major drawcard. Here an iconic Surf Life Saving tower is not yet open for the day, in the early morning hours before the beach is filled with swimmers. There are 14 Surf Life Saving Clubs across the Sunshine Coast. Tourism is a key driver in the Sunshine Coast economy, delivering over $2.5 billion to the local economy in 2017. The Sunshine Coast is renowned internationally for its outstanding lifestyle benefits, strong environmental conservation ethic, and of course the typical Aussie relaxed beach culture.

On the afternoon of September 9, 2019, bushfires began in the Sunshine Coast residential suburb of Peregian Springs. With extremely dry conditions and fanned by strong northwesterly winds, the situation quickly escalated into a major bushfire emergency. The suburb of Peregian Springs was evacuated first, and as the fires spread into the night, surrounding areas of Peregian Breeze estate, Peregian Beach, Weyba, and Marcus Beach were also evacuated, with Sunshine Beach, Noosaville, Noosa Heads and other nearby areas put on high alert. Here shocked local residents watch the fires from the Peregian Springs water tower on day 2. It took over a hundred fire crews almost 48 hours to bring the fires under control, with thousands of affected residents evacuated for up to two days.

The Mount Coolum boardwalk is a key section of the Coastal Pathway, an initiative to get more people active through sport and recreation, which is jointly funded by the Sunshine Coast Council, Caloundra Council, the Queensland Sport and Recreation Program, the Queensland Government Cycle Network Program, and Rotary Clubs. The Coastal Pathway stretches 73 kilometres from Pelican Waters Bell’s Creek in the south to Tewantin in the north, with some sections still under construction or rejuvenation. The Coastal Pathway is a popular attraction among both tourists and locals for the stunning beaches, coastal environments, and scenery along the way.
