On the afternoon of September 9, 2019, bushfires began in the Sunshine Coast residential suburb of Peregian Springs. With extremely dry conditions and fanned by strong northwesterly winds, the situation quickly escalated into a major bushfire emergency. The suburb of Peregian Springs was evacuated first, and as the fires spread into the night, surrounding areas of Peregian Breeze estate, Peregian Beach, Weyba, and Marcus Beach were also evacuated, with Sunshine Beach, Noosaville, Noosa Heads and other nearby areas put on high alert. Here shocked local residents watch the fires from the Peregian Springs water tower on day 2. It took over a hundred fire crews almost 48 hours to bring the fires under control, with thousands of affected residents evacuated for up to two days.
