President & Chief Executive Officer Baptist Health

One of my favorite parts of my role is spending time in our facilities and rounding with Baptist Health team members. I also think it is the most important use of my time engaging with our team members and hearing there concerns, feedback and personal stories. This morning I rounded at Baptist Clay. I joined the team for their morning safety huddle and then rounded in the ED and Surgury areas. Joining me were Ed Hubel, Hospital President and Sean Ramsey, Admin. Summer Intern. Thank you to the Baptist Clay team for living out our mission and providing quality care to the Clay County community. One team member I spent time with is Matthew Fleming. Matthew is a Patient Access team member in the Clay Surgery Department. He is a key team member greeting patients and getting them registered for their procedure. Because of his dedicated and exceptional service I gave him my challenge coin. Joining Matthew and me in the photo is Sean Ramsey. summer Admin. Intern. #BaptistProud #BaptistClay

WE'RE ALL HUMANS FIRST: As we close out #PrideMonth, get to know Leah Cooter, wound care nurse at Baptist Medical Center Beaches! If you’ve ever spoken with Leah, it’s obvious that she cares about people. Nearly 14 years ago and straight out of nursing school, Leah joined Baptist Health and has held several positions during her time here. “I realized early on in my nursing career that I really love to teach. When our nursing students would come on the unit, it was so fun and rewarding to help them get their start and find their passion for nursing. I’m so grateful for the years I spent with the Learning and Development team,” Leah said. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community and co-chair for the BaptistPRIDE Employee Resource Group (ERG), it was important for Leah to emphasize to our nurse residents that all people are deserving of compassionate and quality care. “We're all humans first. And people, no matter their beliefs or background, are all so valuable,” Leah said. “Genuine, compassionate care can make a strong impact on our patients’ outcomes. The Learning and Development team does its best to support that culture and make it the best that it can be here at Baptist.” “Throughout my life, it’s been up and down. Parts of my family are accepting and others, not so much. It was hard for me to be open about my needs and feelings. Thankfully, I was able to lean on my friends and family who embraced me for who I am,” Leah said. “In all honesty, volunteering and caring for my patients helps remind me that we are all deserving of love and fair treatment. Caring for them helps me love myself even more.” Leah has been a member of the BaptistPRIDE ERG since its inception in 2015 and walked in the very first pride parade that Baptist participated in. “I feel like the ERG is so valuable because it shows our team members and our community that everyone is welcome here. My 25-year-old son also works at Baptist South as a transporter, and I couldn’t be prouder to have him working alongside me at an organization that values diversity and equality.” “It’s amazing that I can be here today to share this message with you, holding my head up high, because others have laid down the foundation of a path to equality. We are walking along the same path today and, brick by brick, we are doing our best to grow it for the next generation,” Leah said. She added, “In honor of Pride Month, I’d like to remind everyone that there is no such thing as perfection. Give yourself grace, give others grace, and do your best to see the world through different perspectives. I think doing this will help drive our love and compassion for one another and lead to a better, brighter community.” #BaptistProud

Today, the National Football League (NFL) announced the roster of students and locations for their NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative. Now in its third season, the program provides medical students the opportunity to complete a clinical rotation with NFL club medical staff across the league. During their rotations, students will observe and participate in the care of players in NFL club settings. We are excited to share that Dr. Kevin Kaplan, head team physician for the Jacksonville Jaguars, will be working with student Sydney Woods from Meharry Medical College! Sydney's clinical rotations will begin as the Jags' training camp opens next month. Read more: https://bit.ly/3KVXckm

Congratulations to Angie Dickinson, RN on her recent Daisy Award! Angie is our Patient Advocate for #BaptistBeaches and was nominated by a fellow team member. "As a devoted member of our team, Angie consistently demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities, compassion, and dedication to providing exceptional care to both patients and colleagues. She has touched the lives of so many of our patients, and most of the time it is because they contact her out of frustration or annoyance of a process either in the hospital or even in the offices that surround the hospital. Her positive energy is contagious, and our hospital is better because of her dedication and attitude. She is always willing to go the extra mile for our patients, and she mentors leaders and team members alike in the best practices for dealing with difficult situations. She serves as a source of inspiration and guidance, always leading by example and motivating others to strive for excellence in their practice. One of the most remarkable qualities of her is her exceptional ability to connect with patients on a profound level. She possesses a genuine empathy and compassion that transcends the traditional roles of nursing and administrator, making patients feel valued, heard, and supported during their health care journey. Moreover, she consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every member of our team feels empowered and supported. She actively promotes a collaborative work environment where open communication, mutual respect, and professional growth are prioritized. I have had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the impact that she has had on our patients, their families, and our entire healthcare team. Her leadership style is characterized by integrity, humility, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, making her truly deserving of recognition through the DAISY Award." Angie, thank you for your compassion and commitment to excellent patient care. We are #BaptistProud to have you on our team!
