It's true! On June 25th, Holland Bioplastics released an important meta-study that summarizes currently available peer-reviewed research on how polylactic acid (PLA) interacts with the environment. The study, conducted by HYDRA Marine Sciences, found that in the presence of water or humidity, PLA will fully hydrolyze, and no persistent nano- or microplastics will remain or accumulate in the environment. 💧 Read all about it in this month's Ingeo News! https://lnkd.in/g9wGew8m Also in this week's edition: 🟢 Green Sports Alliance's new Playbook features the importance of #biobased materials in reuse programs. 🟢 US Composting Council's webinar and Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI)'s petition to allow compostable products into organic compost. 🟢 good natured Products Inc. “This study is particularly important because it is a meta-study evaluating primary research conducted by many different institutions. Hydra Marine Sciences drew its conclusions from peer-reviewed research published in over 500 papers. It is reassuring that such a significant body of research underscores these conclusions and helps guide us as we continue to develop products that will have lower impacts on our ecosystems and our climate.” - Erwin Vink, board member of Holland Bioplastics in Packaging Insights #PLA #microplastics #biomaterials #biopolymers #polylacticacid

It's really fun to get a closer look at a segment of BioHome3D, the world's first 100% biobased 3D-printed home at RAPID + TCT. 🏠 The composite used to print the house contains Ingeo 3D700, a grade we specifically recommend for large-format prints. The smoothness of this print is mesmerizing! 👀 If you're at #RapidTCT24, stop by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory booth to see this beauty in person. And visit NatureWorks at booth 1151 to learn more. Learn about how the BioHome3D came about and why the UMaine Advanced Structures & Composites Center chose to work with Ingeo: https://lnkd.in/gSbUqNTr #IngeoPLA #PLA #BioHome3D #additivemanufacturing #biobased #RapidTCT

Rightly so, microplastics are at the forefront of discussions around fossil-based plastics and alternatives like bioplastics and PLA. This particular meta-study, conducted by Hydra Marine Sciences, drew from an initial scan of over 30,000 reports, of which 500 were identified by HYDRA as relevant and of sufficient quality for deeper review. From this evaluation, they concluded that in the presence of water or humidity, the bioplastic polylactic acid (PLA) will fully hydrolyze, and no persistent nano- or microplastics will remain or accumulate in the environment. 🟢 Executive Brief: https://lnkd.in/gFivyDQt 🟢 Technical Report: https://lnkd.in/gEHxXePk In this instance, a meta-study looking across a broad range of literature is particularly useful. If we set up too narrow boundary conditions when conducting experiments around the intersection of materials and the environment, it's easy to lose track of a larger, more complex reality. Products made from bioplastics are not uniform, and neither is the environment. Therefore, understanding that there are underlying processes that will reduce the persistence and impact of biodegradable plastics like PLA if it does enter the environment helps us to make thoughtful choices as we phase out fossil-based plastics with safer, fully biobased alternatives. #microplastics #bioplastics #PLA
