It's true! On June 25th, Holland Bioplastics released an important meta-study that summarizes currently available peer-reviewed research on how polylactic acid (PLA) interacts with the environment. Rightly so, microplastics are at the forefront of discussions around fossil-based plastics and alternatives like bioplastics and PLA. This particular meta-study, conducted by Hydra Marine Sciences, drew from an initial scan of over 30,000 reports, of which 500 were identified by HYDRA as relevant and of sufficient quality for deeper review. From this evaluation, they concluded that in the presence of water or humidity, the bioplastic polylactic acid (PLA) will fully hydrolyze, and no persistent nano- or microplastics will remain or accumulate in the environment. 🟢 Executive Brief: https://lnkd.in/gFivyDQt 🟢 Technical Report: https://lnkd.in/gEHxXePk In this instance, a meta-study looking across a broad range of literature is particularly useful. If we set up too narrow boundary conditions when conducting experiments around the intersection of materials and the environment, it's easy to lose track of a larger, more complex reality. Products made from bioplastics are not uniform, and neither is the environment. Therefore, understanding that there are underlying processes that will reduce the persistence and impact of biodegradable plastics like PLA if it does enter the environment helps us to make thoughtful choices as we phase out fossil-based plastics with safer, fully biobased alternatives. #microplastics #bioplastics #PLA
