ICYMI, Tram Hoang from PolicyLink shared powerful insights in a timely discussion on "Remaking the Economy: How Policy Can Help Tenants Purchase Their Homes," hosted by Shelterforce and Nonprofit Quarterly. She highlighted, "Housing and land exclusion are racialized in nature, sewn into the very fabric of our institutions, policies, and value systems. And we are in a fight to allow renters - who are disproportionately Black, Indigenous, and people of color - to collectively own property. So we are not just up against a billion dollar lobby, we are also working to shift paradigms of race and property ownership." About us
PolicyLink is a national research and action institute advancing racial and economic equity by Lifting Up What Works®. We seek to deliver and scale results in the following arenas: Equitable Economy: Promote economic inclusion and ownership to eliminate poverty, shrink inequality, and increase mobility. Healthy Communities of Opportunity: Create and maintain opportunity-rich communities in all neighborhoods and all regions of the country through strong networks and social capital, equitable development, and infrastructure investments that enable low-income people and communities of color to thrive. Just Society: Build power and expand agency to ensure that all systems and institutions are just, free of racial bias, and lead to a vibrant democracy where all, especially the most vulnerable, can participate and prosper. We succeed by weaving together four essential functions: Advocacy that advances policy change at all levels of government and across sectors. Applied research and communications that build public and political will for inclusion, justice, and broadly shared prosperity. Constituency and network engagement that empowers leaders to advance equity. Implementation capacity that connects local innovations to policy; and provides stakeholders with needed data and tools. Our work would not be possible without support from a broad array of people, organizations, and communities. Our mission is to advance racial and economic equity by Lifting Up What Works®. Help achieve policies that can ensure equity for all by lending your support. Your contribution makes Lifting Up What Works® possible and enables us to disseminate our findings and provide strategic guidance to coalitions throughout the country. Help create communities of opportunity where everyone can participate and prosper. INVEST IN EQUITY. Donate Now: https://www.policylink.org/invest

Join us this Wednesday, July 17! Center for Ethical Land Transition will share more about approaches to land justice by sharing two land transition stories. Grounding Justice in the Land is a joint webinar with PolicyLink's Spatial Futures team. More details -- 🌀 As we develop reparative spatial justice strategies that reckon with, repair, and transform the racist foundations of land and housing policies in the United States, we are reminded that it is essential that we understand the centrality of land for Indigenous, Black, and People of Color communities. Across the country, and indeed across the world, communities that have faced legacies of dispossession and displacement are growing movements to reshape our relationships to land and create more just spatial futures. In this webinar, we invite you to learn more about the strategies that communities across the country are using to transition land from the speculative market and into community-controlled models of land stewardship and caretaking. 📅 Wed, July 17 🕰 12 - 2pm PST ➡ Register here: https://lnkd.in/g-FnjRbc

It is important to embrace the joy of struggle. Because of that, it's easy to keep going. I can see that the people who have struggled are the ones who have made a difference... and we're on the cusp of a big difference. I've shared these sentiments and more with my friend Steve Phillips on the Democracy in Color podcast. I also talked more about the Reimagining Democracy for a Good Life series as well. Tune into our conversation. https://lnkd.in/gMvykCZu

A historic resolution was introduced in Congress to recognize, protect, and invest in Black Towns and #FreedmenSettlements in the U.S. The degradation of the environment, infrastructure, and economic neglect for these communities contrasts with the historical success of grassroots resistance, emancipation, and justice. OUT NOW: Lawyer and PolicyLink Founder-in-Residence Angela Glover Blackwell discusses her new podcast project "Reimagining Democracy for a Good Life", a six-part series that illustrates the potential of our democracy, using L.A. as an example of what is possible when people come together to create change. She shares her journey from growing up in a segregated St. Louis, MO in the 1950s and 60s to her role as an organizer during the Black Power Movement to a lifelong commitment to social justice, policy work, and activism. Angela also offers advice on how to stay hopeful and engaged in a time when current events leave many feeling discouraged, and she makes a case for why voting isn’t just about ourselves but about the future generations of people to come after. For democracy to endure, it must be multiracial. That is without question. However, I don’t just want a democracy that survives, I want a democracy that thrives. A democracy embraces the potential of our vast diversity – race, gender, religion, nationality, physical and mental abilities – as a gift.
“Our existing composite population conspires to one grand end, and that is to make us [the United States of America] the most perfect national illustration of the dignity of the human family that the world has ever seen.” In 1869, Frederick Douglass outlined his vision for the new multiracial democracy. The United States has yet to witness a robust, just, vibrant democracy that equitably functions amid profound differences, but once again that opportunity is upon us. https://lnkd.in/ed6pXShf

Hot off the press! A new Smart Cities Dive opinion piece by our Senior Housing Associate, Jasmine Rangel, discusses how the White House has recently taken steps to combat housing discrimination and urges states and local governments to follow suit. "With an increasingly ruthless housing market—where applying for several apartment units can end up costing hundreds of dollars, and renters face competition from at least eight other applicants on average—governments at all levels must implement solutions."
