Job Summary: The Director of Housing and Residence Life is responsible for the administration and operation of the University's residential living program and serves as a visionary leader within the Division of Student Affairs, facilitating partnerships with Academic Affairs to provide students with a vibrant learning environment. The Director shall manage and supervise the overall operations of a broad range of university-owned housing facilities. This position works closely with all departments, primarily Student Life, Facilities, Enrollment Management, and Fiscal Affairs, to manage all housing facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

The Director is responsible for and must address the following:

  • The living environment, including educational and community-building programs and services that promote learning and development in the broadest sense, with an emphasis on student experiences and academic success;
  • Living facilities that are clean, attractive, well-maintained, comfortable, and which include contemporary safety features maintained by systematic operations
  • The orderly and effective management of residence life programs that meet the needs of students and other constituents courteously, efficiently, and effectively
  • The Director will help the university develop a long-term vision for a comprehensive residence life program, including the program development for new housing facilities as reflected in the University's short-term and long-term Campus Master Plan


Responsibilities:

The Director of Housing and Residence Life will manage and operate all residence life operations by performing the following duties:

  • Assisting in the retention, academic, health and wellness, and spiritual development and success of all residential students
  • Recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating a student staff to achieve the goals and objectives of residence life
  • Report, track, and follow up on maintenance issues with appropriate building managers, housekeeping staff, and physical facilities employees
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates educational, social, cultural, and co-curricular programming for resident students
  • Prepares budgets and monitors expenditures for all programs assigned and ensures proper maintenance of records.
  • Facilitates developing, implementing, and evaluating training and policy/procedures/protocols, manuals, handbooks, etc.
  • Cultivate a positive and engaging living environment that fosters a sense of belonging and enables students to build positive relationships with one another
  • Utilize institutional data to assess and respond to student needs
  • Establishes and affirms standards of conduct appropriate to residential living and campus programming
  • Markets Housing and Residence Life to the public and the university community
  • Develops a rapport with students and serves as an advisor and mentor for concerns related to the position
  • Counsels student residents and employees concerning academic and social needs
  • Establishes positive working relationships with other appropriate staff and groups within the campus community
  • Establishes positive working relationships with community organizations and promotes the development of University programmatic collaborations within the residence halls
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff stakeholders to implement programmatic opportunities, some of which may be connected with living-learning community themes
  • Participates in departmental, division, and university goal-setting, committees, and special projects
  • Oversee implementation of programs and strategies that enable student achievement of the Pillars of Success
  • Serve on University committee councils and attend functions as a representative of the University and other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in departmental and divisional professional development activities
  • All other duties as assigned


Required Skills/Abilities/Experience:

  • Minimum of seven years of professional experience in a supervisory role working in Housing, Residence Life, or closely related experience
  • Serve as a role model for all hall staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors
  • Practice ethical stewardship of university resources
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity by promoting and attending campus & community multicultural events, facilitating professional development with RA staff, presenting on variety, or implementing strategies.
  • Demonstrate a consistent willingness to work with individuals from different race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, and national origin backgrounds
  • Create and maintain positive professional relationships within the department and across the university
  • Fulfill other general duties assigned by the Office of Residence Life, Division of Student Affairs, and Bethune-Cookman University


Education:

  • Master's degree in higher education/ college student personnel, business, or related field.


Environment and Physical Conditions:

  • Working environment is a normal business office setting
  • Normal manual dexterity and visual and auditory acuity
  • Typically, the incumbent may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending or carrying of light items
