To unleash the full potential for cross-sector development, the Nordland region is dependent on new people bringing their unique skills, with many of them only being found internationally. For this reason, last year we were tasked by Nordland county to help the region create the best possible experience for the newly arrived international “nordlanders”, with the long term aim of stimulating the county/fylke and communities to thrive sustainably, over time. “Ny i Nordland” is a stimulab project by Designit Oslo and Menon economics, in close collaboration with a rich project group made of Nordland fylkeskommune, its municipality actors, local businesses, and organisations in the region. Through a thorough insight phase, we found evidence of how, among other things, newcomers experience a holistic need for social integration that was not met by the existing systemic structures. This led to an inspiring ideation and prototyping phase, facilitated by Designit and Menon, but conducted by the local actors themselves to ensure ownership and engagement of the outcomes. I forbindelse med "European Independent Living Day", en dag som feirer alle de som har kjempet og fortsetter å kjempe for funksjonshemmedes likestilling i samfunnet, inviterer vi til frokostseminar sammen med Ekskurs! Vi ønsker å trekke frem hvordan det er å ha en fysisk funksjonshemmelse Norge i dag, der over 100.000 står utenfor arbeidslivet, og mer enn 700.000 står ved siden av samfunnet. Videre skal vi presentere case eksempler på hvordan vi har jobbet for å gjøre tjenester og produkter tilgjengelige for alle, og Ruter kommer til å dele hvordan de har jobbet for å endre kulturen i sin organisasjon for å sette et større fokus på inkludering og mangfold. Earlier this month, Designit was awarded Design and Architecture Norway - DOGA Innovation Prizes for Inclusive Design, in the categories of Transportation Design and Service Design! ✨ We are incredibly proud of this work and thankful for all the wonderful collaborating partners who made these projects possible. Tram for All: the result of a fantastic collaboration with Sporveien AS, that spanned across 7 years, and led to a crew of 87 new trams servicing the people of Oslo. The Bridging Service: A holistic solution to address Grünerløkka’s youth dropouts, was the result of a fantastic collaboration with Grünerløkka district (Bydel Grünerløkka), the Agency of Education in Oslo (Utdanningsetaten), Designit and Menon Economics.  The ‘Do No Harm framework for design’, a practical approach to support design practitioners to start considering and applying ethics in projects and across the design process. Our friends at Travers will also discuss responsible design and societal development.

We have been awarded the DOGA Innovation Prize for Inclusive Design under category Service Design! Design and Architecture Norway - DOGA The winning project, The Bridging Service—A holistic solution to address Grünerløkka’s youth dropouts, was the result of a fantastic collaboration with Grünerløkka district (Oslo Kommune, Bydel Grünerløkka), the  Agency of Education in Oslo (Utdanningsetaten), Designit and Menon Economics. Grünerløkka, with its 62,500 inhabitants, is Oslo’s most populous district. It is also the district with the highest social contrasts in the city. In recent years, Grünerløkka district and the Agency of Education are registering a high drop-out rate between middle school and upper secondary school among the district’s youth. Reasons for dropping out are many and complex, and there’s no single root cause to point at and solve. Without completed upper secondary education, it can be more difficult to enter the job market, which can further cause people to fall between the cracks through to adulthood. The team approached the challenge holistically, with a strong Do No Harm and Inclusive Design lens, by building on research insights and continuous co-creation and user testing with teachers, district employees and youth. We collaborated with with Menon Economics, Grünerløkka district and the Agency of Education to design measures that support young people in this vulnerable period.The result of this process was a service centred around a new role, the Bridging Guide. These guides work closely with young people, parents and other relevant actors, such as teachers and advisors. The project acted as a bridge between the district and schools, building on existing services and offerings, resulting in a new service that supports students graduating. To this day, the Bridging Service has supported 75 youth, with 73 of them still in educational programs. 97% of youth supported are still in education in after one and two years. We have been awarded the DOGA Innovation Prize for Inclusive Design, in the category of Transportation Design! Design and Architecture Norway - DOGA The winning project, Tram for All, is the result of a fantastic collaboration with Sporveien AS and Ruter As, that spanned across 7 years, and led to a crew of 87 new trams servicing the people of Oslo. Sporveien and Ruter are the main providers of public transportation in Oslo, the capital of Norway. Together, with internal teams from Ruter, Sporveien, representatives from different employee unions, technical managers, stakeholders and many different traveler groups, we produced a design guide that is visionary, visually engaging and communicative. The guide outlined the background, vision, values and design principles to guide the suppliers when proposing their best tram for Oslo. The approach helped us create a design guide to challenge the suppliers by setting requirements and guidelines for materials, interiors, exteriors and experience. The guide also helped the evaluation team in selecting the best proposal and throughout the design phase with the supplier of the winning tram, CAF, in what we called "design-driven procurement process". This project is a fantastic example of inclusive user involvement for universal design in public services, achieved by engaging users at all stages of the process, from early definition to verification testing on trams in traffic. The new trams have better space, are safer to operate and access, have more doors, and are easier to board and operate. Overall, the new trams provide a smoother and more efficient experience for conductors and travellers.
