I believe one of the biggest challenges for a company pushing to scale to $1B and beyond is the transition from being a best-of-breed single product business to a true multi-product company. This is especially challenging when the portfolio expansion takes the company into new buyers, budgets and separate sales cycles. I’ve seen, firsthand, best practices for how this should be done. Albeit a much larger company than $1B, I always felt Cisco showed consistent mastery of how to bring new products serving market adjacencies. Plenty of lessons observed and learned! After tackling these challenges as CMO for scaling companies, I’ve built strong conviction that an outbound Product Marketing organization has the opportunity to lead the definition and execution of “GTM Flow” … the discipline of architecting the right GTM for each new product … from early development parallel planning to launch to ramp. In Chapter 5 of my CMO Blog Series, I’ve done my best to capture my experiences (and some regrets) on this topic.
