Osmo Vänskä and Anthony Ross

Vänskä and Ross

Thu Oct 31 — Sat Nov 2, 2024

Orchestra Hall

~2 hours, including intermission

While reading W.B. Yeats during the pandemic, Donghoon Shin felt an immediate connection between the poetry’s sense of despair and what was happening around him. Discover where that led him and hear the music of two composers writing near the mid-1900s: William Walton’s Cello Concerto and Sergei Prokofiev’s wartime Fifth Symphony, conceived of as “glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit.”

A Few Things to Know

  1. A hidden retreat space known as the Composers’ House in Ivanovo was designated for select Soviet composers such as Shostakovich, Glière and Khachaturian to continue working on their music during World War II; this is where Sergei Prokofiev composed his Fifth Symphony.
  2. Since becoming Principal Cello of the Minnesota Orchestra in 1991, Anthony Ross has been featured as soloist dozens of times, becoming a local celebrity in the Twin Cities music scene. This week’s concerts mark only the second time that Ross has taken on the exquisite Walton Cello Concerto with the Orchestra.
  3. The world premiere of Donghoon Shin’s Upon His Ghostly Solitude was conducted by Minnesota Orchestra Music Director Laureate Osmo Vänskä in April 2023 at a concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The piece is inspired by W.B. Yeat’s emotionally complex poem, “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen,” and its disconcerting relevance to worldwide events today.
