Woman leaps from third deck of Oakland stadium after NFL game

A woman jumped from the third deck at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in northern California on Sunday, severely injuring herself and a man who tried to catch her, an Alameda County sheriff's office spokesman said.

Following the NFL football game pitting the Oakland Raiders against the Tennessee Titans, the woman went into section 301, an area that is closed off to the public, and then moved to jump off the edge around 4:30 p.m. local time, Sgt. J.D. Nelson told NBC Bay Area.

People on the second deck concourse level below attempted to persuade the woman not to jump, Nelson said.

"She jumped anyhow, and one guy tried to catch her," Nelson said.

The woman was taken to a hospital in "very critical" condition, and the man who tried to catch her — a 61-year-old former Marine — was in stable condition, Nelson said.

Earlier on Sunday, a man fell down 14 steps and hit his head at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md., during the Ravens-Jets game, said Captain Demy of the Baltimore Fire Department.

The 48-year-old man was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was reported to have life-threatening injuries.

The cause behind the man's tumble is under investigation.
