At least 230 people were killed when a fuel tanker exploded in a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo where hundreds of football fans had gathered to watch Ghana’s World Cup quarter final.

The tanker overturned on Friday evening at a junction in Sange, about 60 miles from the war-torn town of Bukavu in eastern Congo, drawing a crowd of onlookers that included scores of children.

Some people were doused with fuel as they tried to siphon the contents of the tanker. Oil running among thatched huts made from dried leaves and hardened mud compounded the danger.
