A National Memorial

A memorial tablet in marble or bronze in Westminster Abbey or St Paul’s is likely to give fitting expression to the feeling of England

Sir, In common, no doubt with many others, I have received an invitation to join in a women’s movement for the erection of a memorial to the heroic woman, Nurse Edith Cavell, who, by a deed of infamy unsurpassed even in the German conduct of this war, has just been put to death in Belgium. Everyone who has received the invitation must sympathize with its object. But I venture to suggest that this thing should be done in a manner worthy of such a tragedy and such a sacrifice. Will not our Queen take the lead in the name of the women of England?
