A top drawer debate on a top shelf issue

THERE is very little that excites the Commons as much as a debate condemning sexually explicit material. They are not fussy about what type of material to be outraged over. Books, films, magazines, photographs, newspapers: any material will do as long as it contains the requisite amount of filth. Yesterday the material in question was lads’ mags and I was not surprised to see that the chamber was quite full to hear how awful it was.

Claire Curtis-Thomas (Lab) presented her ten-minute rule motion (a meaningless parliamentary device, but then so many are) with the missionary zeal of a ratcatcher who feels it is her duty to show us the most disgusting rodent she has ever caught, but only for the greater good. MPs, in
