Three white men convicted of murdering a black man jogging near their homes in Georgia have been sentenced to life in prison.

Travis McMichael, 35, and his father Gregory McMichael, 66, were given life plus 20 years without parole for starting the chase that ended in the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, 25, in February 2020.

Their neighbour William “Roddie” Bryan, 52, who was also convicted of murder, was sentenced to life but with the chance of parole after serving at least 30 years behind bars.

During the sentencing hearing Arbery’s mother asked for the maximum sentence, saying that her suffering had been made worse by having to endure a trial in which the defence tried to blame her son for his death.

“This wasn’t a
