The picture painted of Edinburgh city council by Jenny Dawe, its former leader, will have done little to boost the reputation of local government in Scotland (Mike Wade writes).

Ms Dawe described a regime in which Tie, a company set up by the council, ceased to work in harmony with it and in which city officials failed to brief councillors properly before decisions.

Members themselves were far from blameless. In the days when Ms Dawe led a Lib Dem-SNP coalition (2007-12) not all of them could be relied upon to read briefing documents for the biggest capital project in the city’s history, she said.
