Andrew Sheridan is waiting to discover if he needs another shoulder operation after being ruled out of the remainder of England’s World Cup campaign.

Sheridan had scans on his left shoulder after England’s 13-9 victory over Argentina last Saturday and surgeons back in Britain, who studied the images, said he would not be able to play any further part in the tournament.

The Sale prop had battled back from reconstructive surgery on his right shoulder to make the World Cup squad, although Martin Johnson’s decision to include five props has bought the England team manager time to settle on a replacement.

Sheridan has already undergone two operations on his left shoulder after injuring the same joint he dislocated badly in 2009 and is not sure
