Andy Murray has confirmed that he has had a hip resurfacing operation as he aims to cure the problem in his right hip that left him suffering pain every day.

“I underwent a hip resurfacing surgery in London yesterday morning...feeling a bit battered and bruised just now but hopefully that will be the end of my hip pain,” he wrote on social media. “I now have a metal hip.”

Murray, 31, announced before the Australian Open that he was planning on retiring this year, explaining in an emotional press conference that the pain had become too much.

He had said that he hoped to have a final appearance at Wimbledon but that it may not be possible due to the debilitating nature of the injury.
