Arsène Wenger today described Arsenal’s 5-1 loss at Liverpool in February as a “scar on his heart” that will hurt him forever.

Arsenal return to Anfield on Sunday for the first time since last season’s humiliating defeat, in which they conceded four goals in the first 20 minutes. It was an embarrassing day for Wenger, compounded by footage of him falling over as he waited to board a train at Liverpool Lime Street.

However, he is confident that Arsenal will avoid a similar slip up this weekend as Liverpool have lost their attacking potency.

“Every defeat hurts you know,” Wenger said. “That defeat is a scar in your heart forever. Liverpool scored over hundred goals that year. They were very good going forward. This season
