There will be epic battles to come on court over the next fortnight, but the most meaningful for the future of Wimbledon centres on a former golf course just across the road.

The genteel surroundings of SW19 have never known such a complex dispute. On one side, the All England Club is insistent that the largest expansion in its history, from 42 to 115 acres, is necessary to keep pace in the tennis version of the space race as the four grand-slam tournaments — Wimbledon, the Australian Open, French Open and US Open — battle it out for supremacy.

On the other side, a well-organised large group of local residents called Save Wimbledon Park vehemently opposes this by claiming that the plans are excessive and
