The BBC’s top news executive told the media to stop “whingeing” as he brushed off an attack by The Guardian.

James Harding, director of BBC News, denied claims by the newspaper that the corporation was trampling on commercial rivals to try to expand digital news operations overseas. The BBC’s plans to expand its online audience to more than 500 million in the next few years has alarmed British newspapers.

Mr Harding, a former editor of The Times, said: “None of us should be whingeing because we’re winning. Britain’s news media is a global success story.”
