Benoît Paire has been fined £12,600 by the ATP after one of the worst tantrums seen on a court in years.

Paire, renowned as one of the most volatile players on the tour, lost his temper and gave up towards the end of his 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 defeat by Marcos Baghdatis in the first round of the Washington Open. He left the court to a chorus of boos from the crowd.

The flashpoint occurred when Paire, ranked No 55 in the world, dropped serve for a second time in the deciding set to go 5-2 down. After dumping a smash into the net, he fell onto his backside and smashed his Babolat Pure Aero Plus racket — which retails at about £200 — into the
