Bhutto party members defect to military side

TEN members of Benazir Bhutto’s opposition Pakistan People’s Party broke ranks yesterday to support the country’s main pro-military party in an attempt to form a national Government.

The revolt cleared the way for the Pakistan Muslim League (PML (Q)) to head the first elected civilian Government in three years since President Musharraf seized power.

It also scuppered Miss Bhutto’s own hopes of forming a Government and of returning to Pakistan from exile. The former Prime Minister spends her time in London and Dubai. She has refused to accept the constitutional changes that have concentrated all powers in the hands of General Musharraf and a military- dominated national security council.
