David Moffatt, who was named chief executive of the mobile group Lebara yesterday, should brace himself for a spell on the front line, handing out free pre-pay SIM cards to impatient passers-by.

The man he is replacing, the Lebara co-founder Yoganathan Ratheesan, who is becoming chairman, has made it compulsory for all new staff, however senior, to spend time at the sharp end to ensure they remain in tune with the workers trying to sell cheap international calls to migrant workers.
