Boris Johnson is expected to appoint the Conservative’s first female attorney-general and could “spare” women thought to be facing the sack in his reshuffle amid accusations of sexism.

The prime minister is said to be preparing to promote Lucy Frazer, a justice minister and former solicitor-general, to replace Geoffrey Cox.

Oliver Dowden, the minister for the Cabinet Office, is also said to have impressed and is being considered for culture secretary.

Rishi Sunak, the chief secretary to the Treasury who had been strongly tipped to lead a new “super economic ministry”, is expected to stay in his role.

Mr Johnson has faced a mounting backlash over suggestions that he is preparing to sack five women from his cabinet in his reshuffle on Thursday.
