Bride to be dies from effects of long haul flight

A BRIDE-TO-BE collapsed and died from a condition known as “economy class syndrome” minutes after getting off a flight from Australia.

Doctors said that Emma Christoffersen, 28, developed deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot associated with long-distance flights, while travelling home to London on a 20-hour Qantas flight via Singapore.

She complained of feeling unwell on the last part of the 12,000-mile trip and collapsed in the arrivals hall at Heathrow. She died before reaching hospital.

Last night Ms Christoffersen’s mother, Ruth, 54, called for measures to protect passengers from deep vein thrombosis and called for a wideranging inquiry into the problem.

The condition, which is frequently caused by long periods spent sitting in one place, is known to be exacerbated by the cramped conditions
