British tourist raped in South African nature reserve

A British tourist was raped while out walking in a nature reserve in the South African city of Bloemfontein.

A police spokesman said that the 51-year-old woman was allegedly overpowered by two men on Monday morning in the small inner-city nature reserve. Her mobile telephone and cash were also stolen.

Gary Benham, spokesman for the British High Commission in Pretoria, said that a team of consular officials had been sent to the area south of the city to offer assistance.

Colonel Motantsi Makhele, of the Free State police, told the local Volksblad newspaper that 20 people had been arrested in connection with an inquiry.
