The nadir arrived in April 2022 and it was difficult to envisage then that Bryson DeChambeau would not just win a second US Open title but do so as a people’s champion, running through the galleries at twilight with childlike ecstasy. The burly American’s hand had broken after so many bludgeoning drives and the staggering diet that caused him to gain over 40lbs had left him wracked with gut issues.

In the background, DeChambeau was dealing with the deteriorating health of his late father, Jon, and the fine details of his nine-figure defection to LIV Golf. “I didn’t know if I was ever going to play high-level competitive golf again,” he said.

DeChambeau’s unlikely redemption arc and reinvention came to a spectacular peak here at
