Schoolchildren playing in a Sydney park have found a suitcase floating in a duck pond containing the naked body of a young boy wrapped in plastic.
Police said they believed that the child, thought to be between 4 and 8 years old, was murdered. Late last night — more than 24 hours after the body was found — no children had been reported missing.
Police inquiries at schools and a nationwide search of missing persons files found nothing to point to the child’s identity.
Officers believe that the tartan suitcase had been floating on the pond for several days before two young boys, returning home after school on Wednesday, decided to pull it to the bank. It may have already been partially open.
