James Sands has revealed that a conversation with Claudio Reyna, the former Rangers midfielder, convinced him to take the next step of his promising career at Ibrox.

Sands, 21, will become the latest in a long line of Americans to play for Rangers after joining on loan from New York City in an 18-month deal that will become permanent if he fulfils his potential under manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

While not all of Sands’ countrymen have been successful at Rangers, supporters fondly remember USA internationals such as Maurice Edu and Reyna, who played alongside Van Bronckhorst when Dick Advocaat was the manager.
