Yesterday the House of Commons debated antisemitism. Some fine speeches were made, but they cannot mask the irony that this week a number of MPs felt obliged to resign from the Labour Party because of the antisemitism they had been subjected to and witnessed within it.

I am extremely sorry that Luciana Berger and seven other colleagues have had to take the action that they have done. Having spoken at length to some of them in recent weeks, I understand their reasons. While I regret their decisions, I have enormous sympathy for them given the pressures they have been under and the atrocious abuse to which they have been subjected.
