A Chinese city of four million people was placed under lockdown today, with residents ordered to stay at home as the country battles the latest resurgence of the coronavirus.

Lanzhou, the capital of the northwest province of Gansu, has reported 39 cases since October 18, including six yesterday. Health officials are also carrying out mass-testing as as part of China’s zero-tolerance policy to try to eliminate the outbreak.

All of the city’s residential communities are closed off except for one entrance, with only those who must work on emergency responses, need medical care or need to buy essential supplies allowed to leave.
