The abolition of VAT charged on counselling and psychotherapy sessions in Ireland could be delayed for up to two years, despite the profession receiving regulated status last year. The delay has angered some mental health professionals, who say it shows “a lack of compassion”.

The establishment of the Counsellors and Psychotherapists Registration Board in July last year meant the two professions were to be regulated in the Republic under the one board and no longer subject to VAT, putting them on a par with psychologists, dietitians, and speech and language therapists. Sessions will continue to be subject to a reduced VAT rate of 13.5%, however, until the board members are appointed and the board is properly constituted.
