Craig McPherson, the Rangers Women assistant coach, has been given a six-game ban by the Scottish Football Association after headbutting Fran Alonso, the Celtic manager, in the aftermath of last month’s Scottish Women’s Premier League derby.

A 99th minute equaliser from Caitlin Hayes denied Rangers the victory which Brogan Hay’s first-half strike appeared to have secured, and as Alonso shook hands with players on the pitch after the final whistle, McPherson aimed a headbutt at the back of the Spaniard’s head from behind.

McPherson later apologised in a statement, saying he would “accept in full” any punishment. The 52-year-old former Falkirk and Morton player admitted having broken SFA disciplinary rule 77 which concerns violent conduct, and will now be banned from the touchline for Rangers’
