Tom Daley, poster boy to London 2012, recovered his composure and found his form to finish fourth in the semi-finals of the ten metres platform the morning after scraping through the preliminary round in fifteenth.

Unlike Matthew Mitcham, the defending champion from Australia, who finished thirteenth, the 18-year-old from Plymouth will dive for a medal in the final from 8.30pm tonight.

However, gold looks a remote possibility for Daley with the excellence of China’s Qiu Bo and Lin Yue placing them a class apart in the rounds so far while David Boudia of the United States, a bronze medallist with Nicholas McCrory in the synchronised event, qualified ahead of the Briton in third.
